What does my attachment style affect

The following list is just a sample of what research shows attachment styles predict:

  1. How satisfied we are in a relationship
  2. People with more secure attachment styles tend to report greater satisfaction with their relationships

  3. How likely we are to break up
  4. Those with more avoidant attachment styles are more likely to experience relationship breakups.

  5. How long our relationship lasts
  6. Stable, longer lasting relationships are formed when both partners have more secure attachment types.

  7. How likely we are to become jealous
  8. Our attachment styles predict how often and how we express jealousy in relationships. If your attachment style is more anxious the research shows although you'll experience jealously as often as other attachment styles you're less likely to confront your partner about it.

  9. How often we have relationship problems
  10. Those with more secure attachment types tend to have fewer problems and a greater chance of resolving them.

  11. The likelihood of cheating
  12. Research has shown those with a more anxious attachment style are not only more likely to cheat they're also more likely to take precautions against sexually transmitted diseases.

  13. How attractive we feel
  14. People with more secure attachment styles tend to feel more attractive. It's no surprise to learn that those with more anxious attachment types tend to feel less attractive in relationships.

What will I learn in the relationship test?

Without the help of a relationship therapist it can be difficult to observe our own behaviour and how it affects those we're closest too. Do you become too clingy and don't know why? Perhaps you push people away just when they're getting close. It can be heartbreaking and frustrating trying to understand why we often repeat mistakes in our relationships. Our relationship test uses the well researched measure of adult attachment qualities to reveal insights about our attachment styles. The test was developed by Ph.D. psychologist Charles Carver.

What are attachment styles

We are biologically driven to seek out relationships but how we 'relate' to others in romantic relationships is a learned behaviour. This is our attachment style and the research shows that it remains relatively stable throughout our lives and has a massive impact on our relationships. It affects how long our relationships are likely to last, our compatibility with others and many other factors in our lives. Knowing your attachment style can provide insight into how you cope in close relationships. With knowledge of your attachment style you may understand why you've been unable to become close to someone or why you tend to push people away. Understanding your attachment style provides direction for improving the quality of your relationships.

Tips to get more out of the test

Having your partner take the test to reveal his or her attachment style provides an even deeper level of insight into the dynamics of your relationship. With an understanding of both attachment styles you'll gain insight into your fundamental relationship compatibility.

Consider taking the test at different points in your relationship. Taking the test after ending or starting a relationship may bias your answers and not provide as beneficial a result. Answer the questions as honestly as possible.

Sample Report

You have commitment issues and find it very difficult to commit yourself emotionally to any relationship. This means that other people find it very difficult to get close to you and may not draw much satisfaction from being in a relationship with you.
